Last week Grimsby Town Foundation hosted this year’s EFL Utilita U13s Girls Cup at Clee Fields.
The Utilita Girls Cup is a sister competition of the Utilita Kids Cup ran by the EFL and is one of the biggest football competitions for primary schools in the country.
The competition is designed to create stronger, healthier and more active communities and is a great opportunity for Club Charity Organisations like us to build and develop links with schools in the local community.
It’s also a fantastic way for us to be able to promote the work we do in the community, including the Girl’s Emerging Talent Centre launched back in January.
10 teams attended the event, including last year’s winners John Whitgift Academy playing across two leagues.
Waltham Tollbar and Beacon Academy won their respective groups, setting up a final between the two secondary schools, in which Tollbar emerged victorious after a decisive penalty shootout.
Tollbar progress through to the regional stage of the competition, where they will represent Grimsby Town next year.
Also attending the event was Polly Bancroft, the CEO of Grimsby Town Football Club, and Mike Thompson, Community Director at the Foundation, alongside GTFC Women’s First Team Manager and Girls Emerging Talent Centre Lead Ben Challen.
On the event, Club CEO Polly Bancroft said, “It was great to see so many girls participating in the U13 Utilita Cup.
“The standard was exceptionally high, with lots of really close games. Thanks to all the schools that took part and best wishes to Tollbar who progress to the next round and represent GTFC.”
