Breaking Barriers with ‘Our Zone’ sessions

The ‘Our Zone’ sessions launched in September in partnership with YMCA Humber and Premier League kicks have now been able to allow sessions to include activities outside of the Charity’s hub on Kent Street.

‘Our Zone’ is designed to offer a relaxed and welcoming environment just for girls, to encourage them to stay active, but to also offer a wellbeing service.

On Tuesday, coaches from the Foundation and representatives from YMCA Humber took the group of girls to the local ice rink in Grimsby for their session.

Most of the girls who attend this group wouldn’t normally have access to activities like ice skating, so it was a crucial activity that didn’t allow the girls to just enjoy themselves but also step out of their comfort zones and try something new.

This adds onto the drop-off service we included into the sessions to ensure that the young girls in the local area get home safe and feel confident to continue attending the sessions during the darker and colder nights.

On the importance of these sessions, Premier League Kicks Lead Mikey Pickett said, “Our Zone Premier League Kicks sessions are so important for empowering young girls and giving them access to opportunities they might not otherwise have.

“Premier League Kicks enables them to take part in new experiences, giving the participants a sense of achievement, teamwork, and belonging within their community.

“This wouldn’t be possible without the great partnership Grimsby Town Foundation has with the YMCA Grimsby, and all the hard work that Ellie, and the YMCA team have put in to make this session possible.”

Sarah Howden, Wellbeing Officer at the YMCA Humber added, “Here at the YMCA we are passionate about the work we do with in our Youth service. It is our aim to create a safe and welcoming space for all the young people in our area, where they can gain support to focus on all aspects of their wellbeing.

The Our zone sessions which we run in partnership with Grimsby Town Foundation offers a safe space for girls to come and work on themselves and talk through any issues they have but to also take part in sports and activities which they may not get the opportunity to anywhere else.

“This was seen recently when we arranged the ice-skating trip. Seeing the girls have so much fun and learning a new skills was a joy for us all. The aim of these sessions is to empower the girls with female role models to help them to achieve their goals and see they can do what they set their minds too.

“The support, skill and the knowledge which the ladies from the foundation bring is invaluable to making the sessions a success. We are also grateful of the use of the GTF minibus and the work that Ellie puts in to make sure girls can attend and then get home safely during the darker nights.

“This year we are inviting women from a range of professions to come and speak with the girls about their occupations. We are hoping this empowers them and informs them of different job roles which they can achieve.”
